Music | Music Director Michael C. Haigler, Music Director
Michael C. Haigler began at Christ Church in January of 2005 as an Interim and became the permanent Music Director in 2006. He came to Christ Church after Music Director posts at St. Andrew’s Episcopal in Staten Island, St. Timothy’s in Calhoun, GA, and The Church of the Ascension in his hometown of Cartersville, GA. In addition to his regular church music duties, Mr. Haigler also serves as Artistic Director of Concerts at Christ Church, and holds positions as Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor of the Bronx Opera Company, Assistant Conductor of the Orchestra of the Bronx, and Music Director of “Festival 56”, a summer theater festival in Princeton, Illinois with which he is a founding member. Additionally, he writes the hymnody column for Synthesis, a monthly liturgical publication for clergy and church musicians.
Mr. Haigler graduated magna cum laude from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and moved to New York City in 2001. In the years since he has been active in church music, symphony orchestra, oratorio, and opera, conducting productions with Concerts at Christ Church (NY), the Bronx Opera, the Opera Company of Brooklyn, Riverside Opera (Staten Island), The New York Metro Vocal Arts Ensemble (NYC), and the Lehman College Drama Department (Bronx). Earlier credits include the Atlanta Opera Studio (GA), the Sarasota Opera (FL), the Sarasota Pops Orchestra, Knoxville Opera (TN), and Virginia Opera.
In 2001 Mr. Haigler was chosen as one of eight conductors out of over 350 applicants as a finalist in Lorin Maazel’s International conducting competition, and has won many awards as a pianist including the prestigious Atlanta Steinway Society competition, and the National Music Camp’s Van Cliburn Award. He is also an active composer receiving commissions from the Goliard Chamber Ensemble (Queens), the Yale University Bluedogs (CT), and Irving Park Lutheran Church in Chicago.
